11 Weeks!!

Yesterday was week 11 of our wait for referral. It is getting closer and we are starting to get excited. What does this mean exactly? Well, let's just say that many people from our agency have gotten their referrals around 16 weeks of waiting. Here are some blogs that I follow that recently got the call (as in this week!!):

The Road to Our Own
On the Road
Congratulations to them! It is wonderful to watch their experiences through this adoption process.

The Long Goodbye

Our foster son will be reunited with his father this Friday. It is bittersweet, as I am happy for R. and his dad while at the same time I am so sad to say goodbye. Last week he said goodbye to all his friends and mentors at the East Atlanta Kids Club, an awesome organization we became involved in last year. R. has had the chance to participate in an array of fun activities. We watched him race in the annual bike rally and march in the East Atlanta Strut parade. R. and I got to make a wonderful lunch together for our community retirement home members which will always be a fond memory for me. I was tearing up watching him give hugs to a special group of people who have showed him so much love and support. This week he will be saying goodbye to all his friends and teachers at school. He is having his first sleep over with his best friend on Thursday. It’s a school night but his last chance before he leaves. I just want him to enjoy his last few days with us. We are going to have one last family movie night and go to his favorite restaurant. I hope that we can stay in contact with him. His dad said that we could take him for a weekend sometime. This meant so much to me…I just can’t imagine never seeing him again after sharing the last year and a half raising him. Tonight his father came to drop him off at our house after his weekend visit. We usually met at McDonalds. He moved most of R’s toys and his bike. It is going to feel very empty around here for awhile.

Getting Ready

We are getting ready to drive down to Florida to see my family for Thanksgiving. Fortunately, it feels like we are finally recovered from all the illnesses that crept upon us. To say the least, it was a whirlwind with the last placement. It was really hard because the baby stopped sleeping through the night and was depressed. It seemed like she had a close bond with her family. When I talked to them I found out she stayed home with her grandmother. Hence, daycare was not a fun experience for her. It did get better towards the end and she probably would have adjusted. It just goes to remind me how different every child is in how they deal with loss. These are great lessons for me as an adoptive parent because I am prepared for anything. With Kay, it was such an easy adjustment but I can’t expect that every time; this little girl reminded me of that. They moved her back home last week. I was happy she could be reunited with her family. I just hope they take better care of her and I pray no harm ever falls on her because of her mother’s neglectfulness. We are moving on and getting ready for the holidays. Our foster son will be with his dad and sister. Then he will be with us for two more weeks before his court case to go home. I really can’t believe he is going home for good. The case worker thinks that they will require him to stay until the school break. Of course, I wouldn’t mind! I also wouldn’t be surprised if they say he can go home December 7th. I will try to be prepared either way.

One month down!

We have been officially waiting for one month as of yesterday. I am excited that we are one month closer to our first child!! It went fast…especially with our new arrivals. Yes, I said arrivals. Last Sunday we agreed to take another foster child. She is two years old and is having quite the time adjusting. It is heart wrenching to watch a depressed toddler. I know we said no more but I hadn’t told them to stop calling. When they called they said they had an abandoned one year old girl. How could we say no? By the time she came to the house, they had found her family. I guess it was some sort of a mix up. Anyway the investigator said she would go home on Tuesday. We packed her up and said goodbye. That afternoon, he called to say she was staying, the judge did not grant her permission to go home. I was freaked out because I do not want to go through what we did with Kay. It seems like a very similar situation and they dragged her placement out to the point that it was difficult for everyone to say goodbye. For the time being she is here for bit. I really enjoy her, she is quiet and sweet. She is sick right now…probably from daycare (I don’t think she had gone to one before) and has gotten the hubby is sick. As you can see, I haven’t had much time to watch the clock tick away. Which is a good thing…I would make myself crazy!

I LOVE Referrals

I love it when other families get their referrals. I am so excited for them and I don't even know them. I think it's because I know what they have gone through to get there.
Here are some links to recent referrals on blogs I read:
Bringing Home Baby Ian
Ethiopia Mama
Both of these families are working with our agency, The Gladney Center for Adoption. I had been checking and waiting for them to get the call. I am so happy for them and I can't wait to be where they're at.....I can't wait to see our daughter!!

Now you see him, Now you don’t

Friday we had a new arrival, a five year old boy. It was a crazy weekend with a very busy five year old. Saturday I started to panic and felt we had made a mistake by taking another child. C. and I keep saying no more and then we waver. We were thinking of a little one again and when they called for this little boy, I just said yes. Interestingly enough, we had gotten a call about a year ago for him when he went into foster care the first time. If you don’t answer or call back, they just call the next family in line until someone says yes. We had missed the call. Anyway, I feel like we should be spending quality time together rather than going through the ups and downs of foster care. We are getting ready for the baby and are trying to get her room ready. It is so hard to adjust and I was worried about bringing him to work with me. Our other foster son started going to school where I teach this year. It has been great but each child is different and I worry about it not working out. By Sunday, I had resigned myself to accepting the situation and enjoying the time with this unique little person. C. is very logical and never frets like I do. He was never concerned about the situation. Today, I brought him to school and enrolled him in a new class. By this afternoon, we had heard from the social worker that he was going to live with a relative. In the end, the social workers never really know what is going to happen. They thought he would be sticking around for awhile, but the judge decided otherwise. I think it was a good choice. He would have just gotten settled here and then they would have had to move him all over again. The quicker they can be placed permanently the better. Of course, now I feel his absence and it is a bit sad. Our son was pretty bummed out. He gets attached easily and I think it makes him think of his own situation. He wonders why he hasn’t gotten to go home yet. The end result of this whole thing is that we need to stop taking new children. I’m not sure if that means forever or until our daughter is older. We will just have to wait and see.

The Beginning of the End

The judge granted weekend visitation to Ricky’s dad. We knew this was coming…it is the next step in the process of him going home. It is sad for us; it is the beginning of him leaving our family. We have been prepared to say goodbye at least twice and both times things changed and he stayed. Of course, his dad was not out of the picture, so the thought of adoption was slim. We in no way want to pressure his father to give him up, especially if he wants and is prepared to be a parent. Now, for some reason, it feels like he really is going home. Ricky stayed Monday because we had no school and he is back with his dad today. When we picked him up last weekend he was sad to leave his dad, the excitement of the weekend coming to an end. It is so hard to imagine what he goes through. He is straddling two different worlds, with two sets of expectations. From our past experience, this is a troublesome time. Weekend visits did not equate to the happiest times for us. They came with a bad attitude and rocky behavior at home and at school. I hope he knows how much we love him. I hope we can make this time easier for him; I’m just not sure how to do this. His next court date, December 7th, is the one that should reunite him with his dad. I just hope I don’t break into a million pieces. I miss him already and he isn’t even gone yet.
